THE MARTIAL LIFE

Geoffrey Biggs, THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 162A) - A 'Special Issue' from Gilberton, being historically-educational about the Civil War.

Alex Blum, THE SCOTTISH CHIEFS, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 67) - A comic adaptation of the early historical-novel portraying William Wallace by Jane Porter. Note that Blum has penned the earlier edition of this particular cover, so there's a contingent of people who do not have complete confidence that his identification for this one isn't instead some confusion with that.

Alex Blum, UNDER TWO FLAGS, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 86) - A comic adaptation of this novel by 'Ouida' (Maria Louise Ramé).

Stanley Borack, THE SAILOR WHO BROKE OUT OF CAMP HORROR, (STAG 1958-May) - "Book Bonus: The Sailor Who Broke Out Of Camp Horror (an amazing World War Two escape story) // City Of Lonely Women // The FBI's Death Duel With Baby Face Nelson"

John Buscema, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, (ABRAHAM LINCOLN LIFE STORY # 1) - A Dell one-shot about the honored president. - John Buscema seems to have done all other artwork in the publication and Heritage Auctions feels the cover is his as well.

John Buscema (only my own attribution), PRINCE VALIANT AND THE QUEST FOR GREEK FIRE, (FOUR COLOR # 699) - "He searched a war torn continent to find 'The Secret Of The Flames !'" - I think I'm going to be standing by myself here with my attribution.  When I first started gathering these cover images, I saw this one and said "Wow ! That looks like nothing so much as a Conan painting by Marvel's John Buscema."  Other people clearly had the same idea, but a very comprehensive checklist of Buscema's work does not indicate it as his.  Then a Prince Valiant researcher, in a collection, attributed it to Franco Picchioni.  I'm not sure from where he drew his certainty, but I hope it was not just that artist's later rendition of the character in a similar composition, as that could just be an artist utilizing previous art elements (of another artist's) for foreign editions of works in the same series, a not uncommon practice.  Indeed, Picchioni's other pieces just don't show me the same energy & verve that I see happening in this one.  Later when I learned that Buscema *had* done interior work for Dell/Western and that even at least one painted cover for them was attributed to him, I decided to just follow my instincts and place his name here until I'm convinced otherwise.

Mel Crair, 18 HOURS IN HELL, (BLUEBOOK FOR MEN 1965-June) - "18 Hours In Hell--The life-and-death foxhole saga of James Garner // Baldness Has Been Cured! An exciting new medical discovery for men // Hand Writing Sex Guide // Normandy Nightmare--Incredible heroism of our GI's at St.Lo as told by America's most famous war correspondent, Ernie Pyle // Exclusive Report-A Super Planet Is Calling Earth // 3-Way Loving--The New Look In Modern Harems // Bluebook exposes the greatest scandal of the '60's--We're Killing Our Own Boys In Vietnam // Nude Sunbathers Of Paris"

Mel Crair, WE WERE DEAD FOR 11 YEARS, (MAN'S MAGAZINE 1957-May) - "Strangest story of World War II--'We Were Dead For 11 Years' // Sex meaning Of Your Dreams // My Life In A Psycho Ward // How To Save Money On Your Car // Bonus story--The Story Of The Meat Grinder Killer by Alan Hynd"

Mel Crair, BRAINWASHING - "The story of the men who defied it // The war book you will never forget" - The Pyramid paperback release of Edward Hunter's book.  The art was excerpted for a drastically re-designed cover of a later edition from the publisher, and was also seen on the cover of MAN'S MAGAZINE 1957-Sept ("Tragic fate of a Texas GI--'They Call Me A Collaborator' // Hernia-The Great Crippler // Misery Mile-The Bowery,1957--police shakedowns, vice rings, slave labor // The Man The Fight Mob Wants Dead // Sexual Responsibility--What Women Expect From Men").  A couple of years later, Britain's Panther Books used the art on Ivan Chapman's true prisoner tale, Details Enclosed ("The agony, the frustration, the loneliness of four bitter years as a prisoner of the Nazis").

Mel Crair, MAN'S MAGAZINE 1961, (MAN'S MAGAZINE 1961-Dec) - "America's most vicious enemy: Red China's Evil Butcher // Hell-Run Through A New York City Jungle // Why Husbands Cheat On Their Wives // Man's discovers: Why Playboys Go To Paree! // Ordeal of a honest joe: 'I Gave Back $ 240,000' // Exclusive: The Drug That Turns Men Into Maniacs!"

Clarence Doore, THE DAY PARIS FELL, (BATTLE CRY 1957-Oct) - "The wildest celebration in history--The Day Paris Fell // The Canadian Corvette: The ship that saved the Atlantic // We buried them alive...in The Death Caves Of Biak // Where The American Army Learned About Sex !" -  The cover was featured in Taschen's MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES.

Clarence Doore, THAT BULLET-PROOF LITTLE RED CROSS, (REAL WAR 1958-Apr) - "That Bullet-Proof Little Red Cross--A company-aid man's dramatic experience on Makin Island // Section Eight--The most tragic story of them all! // Where Were Our Boots?--The Trench-Foot Scandal! // She used her body to bait the dirtiest trap in history...'I Had 50 G.I. Husbands'"

Clarence Doore, 'H' HOUR, (BATTLE CRY 1956-Apr) - "'H' Hour // Army Nurses--Saints or Sinners? // Hot Spot In The Cold War! // We Got Killed At Kasserine Pass !" - Four years later, the publisher, Stanley, re-used the cover (and apparently the story) on their REAL MEN 1960-Dec ("'H' HOUR // She lived to see men tortured... The Lady With The Whip // The 12 Biggest Secrets Of Sex // If you are one of the millions suffering from diabetes... Death Waits In Your Coffee Cup").

Frank X. Doyle, THE ILLUSTRATED STORY OF THE MARINES, (THE WORLD AROUND US # 11) - "The Terrible Tiger // The Piltdown Hoax // A Gentle Hand // The Floating Laboratory" - Another release in this educational series from Gilberton, the same folks behind Classics Illustrated.

George Englert, MALE 1954, (MALE 1954-Mar) - "Burlesque: How Rough Can It Get? // The Day The Earth Blew // Amok !"

George Evans, CROSS AND COCKADE, (CROSS AND COCKADE JOURNAL (date?)) - This piece reportedly adorned a cover of Cross And Cockade Journal circa 1970s (an aviation history periodical, currently called Cross And Cockade International).  It is presumed to be a depiction of that WWI Lafayette Escadrille pilot (later, film director) William Wellman, as he is featured in the publication for that particular period.

Jack Fargasso, BATTLE IN THE CHINA SEA, (COMBAT # 15) - "War in the China Sea !"

George Gross, ASSAULT PLATOON!, (BATTLEFIELD 1957-Feb) - "Special Book Bonus: Assault Platoon! (The Marines' 12 days of Hell) // The 37-To-1 Shot Of Company G // Bring Back Mr.X--Or Kill Him! (The fantastic secret behind the Dieppe Raid) // The Truth About Those Off-Limit Army Towns"

John Kuller, THESE ARE MY BRIDES, (MEN 1959-Jan) - "'These Are My Brides. This Is My Island' // 'This Time You Won't Bring Me Back'--Escape-survival of 'Behind The Lines' Warrenden // Nude Girls Of Beirut" - Kuller's credit is on this magazine's contents page.

Mort Künstler, THE BULGE, (MEN 1958-Jan) - "The Day We Nearly Lost WWII // 1000 Drowned (the Empress Of Ireland tragedy) // True Book Bonus-My 14 Months On The Island Of Forbidden Women" - I'm making the assumption that the cover art associated with this interior story whose author went uncredited.

Earl Mayan, BATAAN, (COMBAT # 3) - "The Death March of Bataan was history's most deadly parade . . . !" - At least one source has erroneously attributed this work to George Wilson, mainly due to a mis-reading of Mayan's signature.  Note that for the cover, the art had a tinted illustration of the Bataan Death March overlayed.

Gerald McCann, THE LION OF THE NORTH, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 155) - This was an adaptation of G.A. Henty's novel of the same title.  This painting was once auctioned through Heritage as a George Wilson work (and remains archived there as such), but McCann's signature on it seems pretty clear.

John Parker, THE THREE MUSKETEERS, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 1) - A comic adaptation of the novel by Alexandre Dumas (pčre).

Bruno Premiani, THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO, (CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED # 156) - A comic adaptation of the published memoirs of Bernal Diaz Del Castillo.  The Spanish title actually translates to 'The True History Of The Conquest Of New Spain'.  The cover was featured in THE ART OF PAINTED COMICS

Doug Rosa, THE ILLUSTRATED STORY OF THE ARMY, (THE WORLD AROUND US # 9) - Another release in this educational series from Gilberton, the same folks behind Classics Illustrated.

Maurice Thomas, THE PRIVATE WAR OF PETE ORTIZ, (SEE FOR MEN 1960-Nov) - 'The Marines' incredible hush-hush one-man army // beginning on page 12 the only documented account - how they really caught Adolf Eichmann, Hitler's #1 mass murderer !"
